Jack White could hardly be accused of staying out of the public eye once The White Stripes fell into an extended hiatus after 2007’s Icky Thump. His most famous musical project might’ve been inactive, but White never stopped working. He played with two successful bands, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, and he ran his own label, Third Man Records, overseeing releases by everyone from. De Armas's role as an immigrant nurse in the ensemble murder mystery film Knives Out (2019), written and directed by Rian Johnson, was widely praised and marked a breakthrough for the actress.
Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is a wildly successful mystery writer and he’s dead. His housekeeper Fran (Edi Patterson) finds him with a slit throat and the knife still in his hand. It looks like suicide, but there are some questions. After all, who really slits their own throat? A couple of cops (the wonderful pair of LaKeith Stanfield and Noah Segan) come to the Thrombey estate do a small investigation, just to make sure they’re not missing anything, and the film opens with their conversations with each of the Thrombey family members. Daughter Linda (Jamie Lee Curtis) is a successful businesswoman with a shit husband named Richard (Don Johnson) and an awful son named Ransom (Chris Evans). Son Walt (Michael Shannon) runs the publishing side, but he’s been fighting a lot with dear old dad. Daughter-in-law Joni (Toni Collette) is deep into self-help but has been helping herself by ripping off the old man. Finally, there’s Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas), the real heroine of “Knives Out” and Harlan’s most trusted confidante. Can she help solve the case?
The case may have just been closed if not for the arrival of the famous detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, who spins a southern drawl and oversized ego into something instantly memorable. Blanc was delivered a news story about the suicide and envelope of money. So someone thinks this is fishy. Why? And who? The question of who brought in Blanc drives the narrative as much as who killed Harlan. Johnson is constantly presenting viewers with the familiar, especially fans of the mystery movie—the single palatial setting, the family of monsters, the exaggerated detective—but then he subverts them every so slightly, and it feels fresh. So while Blanc feels like a Poirot riff, Johnson and Craig avoid turning it into a caricature of something we’ve seen before.
Craig is delightful—I love the excitement in his voice when he figures things out late in the film—but some of the cast gets lost. It’s inevitable with one this big, but if you’re going to “Knives Out” for a specific actor or actress, be aware that it’s a large ensemble piece and your fave may get short shrift. Unless your favorite is Ana de Armas, who is really the heart of the movie, allowing Johnson to imbue “Knives Out” with some wonderful political commentary. The Thrombeys claim to love Marta, even if they can’t remember which South American country she comes from, and Don Johnson gets a few razor sharp scenes as the kind of guy who rants about immigration before quoting “Hamilton.” It’s not embedded in the entire piece as much as “Get Out,” but this “Out” is similar in the way it uses genre structure to say something about wealth and social inequality. And in terms of performance, the often-promising de Armas has never been handed a role this big, and she totally delivers.

Aclassic parlor mystery whodunnit with Agatha Christie sensibilities and thesheen of America’s 2019 sociopolitical landscape, Knives Out isn’tjust coming to entertain, but to indict. Like his debut feature, Brick, directorRian Johnson is both reveling in as well as subverting classic genretropes in Knives Out, using the mechanics of the murder mystery as thenourishing entrée while allowing for time and place-specific improvisations todazzle as the side-dishes. This isn’t just for show, though. Aside from being adamn good time and a crackerjack mystery, the film deploys its genre deviationswith surgical precision, both delighting its audience as well as forcing themto question their own values along the way.
Thefilm doesn’t waste much time getting to the meat of things, with a housekeeper stumblingupon the corpse of her employer in his Victorian-style mansion as the openingcredits fade in and out. The deceased is famed mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey(Christopher Plummer), who has died as a result of a slashed throat onhis 85th birthday. Knives Out then jumps ahead one week,after Harlan’s funeral, as the Thrombey family gathers at the mansion inanticipation of the will reading. Yet before that can happen, the familymembers must go over the events leading up to Harlan’s death one more time withthe authorities. The two local cops have already heard everyone’s story and areconvinced Harlan’s death was a suicide, yet private investigator Benoit Blanc (DanielCraig) hasn’t ruled anything or anyone out.
Trueto the genre, there’s a full stable of suspects, from Harlan’s alcoholicunderachieving son, Walt (Michael Shannon), the over-the-hill Instagraminfluencer daughter, Joni (Toni Collette), the tough as nails oldest child,Linda (Jamie Lee Curtis), her pushy husband Richard (Don Johnson),their narcissistic adult son, Ransom (Chris Evans), and Harlan’sskittish nurse, Marta (Ana de Armas). As Blanc interviews each in turn,fragments of information tumble out and leave enough breadcrumbs to paint allof them as a suspect either by way of means or motive, much to Blanc’s growingfascination and amusement.
RianJohnson wrote the script for Knives Out, and he’s clearly just asinterested in giving his characters space to play as he is in peeling apart thelayers of their mystery. Harlan’s wealth and how it will be distributedfollowing his demise drives much of the behavior of the suspects, and besides beinga path towards the hilarious at times, it is also informative. Money hasinsulated these people from any meaningful human contact over the years, andwhile they all feign different levels of grief over the family patriarch’spassing, their true motivations are hard to miss. This is nothing new in astory such as this (money driving nefarious doings), but Johnson does aninteresting thing: he lets the audience in on all their secrets.
Thisis as far as this review will go in detailing specifics about the plot, but itshould suffice to say that what makes Knives Out spectacular, rivetingfilmmaking isn’t just the mystery, but the informed route it takes towardpeeling apart its many layers. In any other picture of this genre, revealing aperson’s motivations or secrets might be the big “ah ha” moment, but in thismovie, a more fully realized understanding of the characters and the world inwhich they live is what keeps everything moving towards the finish line. The Av Club Knives Out
Thisis 2019 America, after all: most rich people are heartless, hypocritical assholes,so saving that as a piece of the solution wouldn’t really work in Knives Out.For example, none of the family can seem to remember what country Marta is from,even though all of them seemed to want her at the funeral but were “out-voted”by the others (a pair of hilarious running jokes throughout the film). Each ofthe Thrombeys embraces their privilege to varying degrees, from the gleefullyprickish Ransom (and holy shit, is Evans having a fun time with that) to theteenaged alt-right son of Walt, Jacob (Jaeden Martell), constantly gluedto his phone in his never-ending lib-troll crusade. Even Marta, who seems tohave her own secrets, isn’t immune to the poison this family spills out withevery shudder, so that any time the audience seems to get a handle on what’sgoing on by way of a trusted character guide, they find their footing broken byyet another revelation.
All of the performances, large and small, are spectacular, but it is Craig as the southern-fried P.I. that steals the film, along with Armas’ Marta as his guide to all the family’s drama. The two actors are operating on different frequencies throughout the film, both in terms of their bearing and place in the narrative, yet they find a way to mesh seamlessly like some kind of sweet and sour delicacy. Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, and Michael Shannon all get their moments as well, but it’s Craig and Armas that take Knives Out to the next level.

It’s a plane of cinematic existence where razor sharp writing meets world-class performances by A-list actors operating at the peak of their powers. It’s a place where a finely tuned genre exercise also acts as a primer for relevant social commentary. Knives Out is a lot of fun, but it also asks some very interesting questions, like whether it’s okay to be an asshole to assholes. Is it acceptable to be a little evil so that SUPER evil people don’t prosper, and how far down that line would you go before turning back due to your conscience? Rian Johnson’s tackles all of these questions and more with Knives Out, a movie so good that even internet trolls like Jacob (who likely hated The Last Jedi and made sure everyone knew it) can’t knock it down.
